Dr. Matt Meier is now an Assistant Professor and Director of the Cognitive Psychology Lab at Western Carolina University.

Matt earned his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at UNCG in 2014 under the direction of Dr. Michael Kane in the Attention and Memory Lab. His research program is focused on understanding how and why people who are better able to maintain goals and control their attention exhibit superior performance on many critical human activities, including multi-tasking and reading comprehension.

Portions of Meier’s dissertation that focused on specifying the attentional mechanisms involved in this superior functioning were published in the prestigious Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition (JEP: LMC). Other work that he completed during his time at UNCG has been published in JEP: LMC, Acta Psychologica, and the European Journal of Psychological Assessment.

Meier credits Kane for providing the mentorship that enabled him to become an independent researcher: “I was really fortunate to work with Dr. Kane in my time at UNCG. His mixture of knowledge, passion, and patience provided the perfect environment for my scientific mindset and approach to mature and flourish.”
