Welcome to our new post-doctoral scientist, Dr. Matthew Hughes!

Matthew Hughes received his PhD in Cognitive Psychology in 2014 from Texas A&M University under the direction of Dr. Lisa Geraci. Before joining the UNCG Adult Cognition Lab, Matt completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Lifespan Developmental Psychology Laboratory at Brandeis University under the direction of Dr. Margie Lachman. Matt’s research is primarily concerned with how cognitive performance changes over the lifespan, and how we perceive our own aging process. Specifically, Matt is interested in a concept referred to as “subjective age,” or how old one feels in comparison to their actual age. Matt’s research has also included aging stereotypes, and how they may impact the older adults’ social and cognitive well-being.
