Dr. Gaby Livas-Stein has been selected to receive the Dean’s Award for the Promotion of Diversity and Inclusiveness in the College of Arts and Science.

Gaby’s dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) spans the entire length of her career and encompasses contributions at all levels, from within the department and university, across the state of North Carolina, and at the national and international levels.

Gaby chairs the department Next Generation Research Scholar and Mentorship Program, which supports DEI among emerging underrepresented scholars in the academic pipeline. At the College level, Gaby is Co-Director of the Child and Family Research Network, in which her work has focused on supporting research with minoritized communities.

At the state level, she has provided trainings to mental health providers concerning the delivery of services to the Latinx community. She also advocates for the Latinx community; for example, she was invited to speak with the Governor’s Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs to provide information on the deportation crisis.

Internationally, Gaby has served as the Chair of the Latinx Caucus of the Society for Research on Child Development, which is the major organizational body for child development researchers in psychology and allied disciplines. Under Gaby’s leadership, the Caucus was reinvigorated as a place for fellowship, scholarship, and community.

The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 prize to be used to further advance diversity initiatives. Gaby will also give
a public presentation on her efforts to share and promote such practices throughout the College.
