Dr. Susan Keane (Lead PI) and Co-Investigators Drs. Rosemery Nelson-Gray, Jason Henderson, Julie Mendez Smith, and Gabriela Stein have been awarded a $2,151,377 grant from the Department of Health and Human Resources and Services Administration for the project “Recruiting, Retaining, and Supporting the Training of Clinical Psychologists from Disadvantaged Backgrounds to Enter Primary Care Settings and Medically Underserved Communities.”
These funds will enable the support of high achieving students with demonstrable financial need who are pursuing their clinical psychology degree. Funds will provide scholarships to 17 students annually and will support the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged students. The grant will also enable placement of these students in primary care and medically underserved communities with the goal of exposing graduates to coursework and clinical experiences in these settings.
The project includes a local and national recruitment plan with a focus on providing opportunities to students from Historically Black Colleges/Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, fellow Minority Serving Institutions, and national pipeline programs. It will build on our innovative and successful NextGen model to provide students access to peer, alumni, and faculty mentorship networks, and continue to foster the supportive and stimulating climate necessary to train talented, diverse, and mission-focused clinicians.
