They scurry around the department to classes, labs, and seminars. We see them present and read their reaction papers. Let’s take some time to learn about the people behind the PowerPoints. Graduate students are essential to the research enterprise and valued members of any department with a graduate program. The goal of the “meet the graduate students” series is to learn more about the experiences of these key players in the Department of Psychology at UNCG.
Let’s meet one of our (at the time of this article) second year students, Sloane Freeman. Sloane began at UNCG in the Fall 2024 semester. She works with Dr. Brittany Cassidy and is enrolled in the M.A. program. Sloane earned her undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University.
Path to and Experiences in Graduate School
What inspired you to begin graduate studies? Can you describe your research area and interests?
I am pursuing research on facial perception and race/gender-based stereotyping. I am particularly interested in how facial cues shape people’s judgments of others and how these judgments contribute to everyday forms of societal discrimination. In addition to my research, I am passionate about working directly with children with Autism and plan to pursue a career in behavioral analysis.
What is something you’ve accomplished at UNCG of which you’re especially proud?
One accomplishment at UNCG that I am especially proud of is completing my thesis proposal.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to attend graduate school?
To aspiring graduate students, I would encourage you to give yourself time and grace throughout this journey. Progress is not always linear, and it is completely normal to make mistakes (these are an important part of the learning process!!!).
Fun Facts!
Where are you from?

What do you like to do outside of school?
Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, spending time with friends and family, and exploring new restaurants and breweries.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I am an avid watcher of crime documentaries and interrogation footage, so feel free to chat with me about the latest Netflix docuseries or newly released interrogation videos!
Could you share a favorite movie, book, or band that you would recommend to others?
My most recent favorite documentary is “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish,” and I would highly recommend this quick watch, even to those who don’t usually share my love for all things crime related!
