picture of psychology department staff

How do I learn? What is printing and how can I do it? What’s a form? Where is room 284? You mean there are signs? These are just a few examples of questions our fearless department staff hear and answer every day. Each day, they work behind the scenes to keep our department events and day-to-day lives running smoothly. As we return from Thanksgiving break and reach the homestretch of the semester, it’s time to give thanks for these intrepid individuals by learning more about them. They are featured in the order in which they responded to the author’s quest for knowledge.

Kelsey Hewitt

Department Office Manager and Business Officer

Where are you from? High Point/Greensboro NC

When did you begin at UNCG? I graduated from our Psychology B.A. program in 2015 but began as an employee in February ’18 in Facilities Operations before coming to the Psychology Department the summer of 2020

What is your typical day like at UNCG? Coffee, lots of emails, walking pad time, snacks, then more coffee; rinse and repeat daily

Can you describe a particularly challenging or funny thing that you’ve dealt with at UNCG? The first day of KSL this year, my shoe broke (similar to the shoe gate of Zion Williamson in 2019 – catastrophic start for both of us)

What do you like to do outside of work? Instill in my three kids the importance of choosing winning teams like Duke Men’s basketball, plus running and strength training so I can keep up with said three kids who have endless energy (and drinking coffee of course)

What’s something most people don’t know about you? I met my husband at an off-campus concert near UNCG and he proposed in Foust Park

Could you share a favorite movie, book, or band that you would recommend to others? Caamp and Rainbow Kitten Surprise are my favorite bands

Malcom Moon

Administrative Support Associate

Where are you from? I grew up in Winston Salem, but I’ve lived in NC my whole life!

When did you begin at UNCG? I was a student from 2016-2019 and started as an employee in February 2022.

What is your typical day like at UNCG? On a typical day, I bounce between a variety of tasks as needed to keep things running in the department. This includes answering questions by email and phone from students, faculty, and graduate applicants, making updates to ongoing systems like the course schedule, room reservations, or graduate files, and fixing issues as they pop up, such as refilling printer materials, giving directions, and researching resources on campus.

Can you describe a particularly challenging or funny thing that you’ve dealt with at UNCG? Some of the most challenging and bizarre experiences I’ve had in this job have been fielding outreach from the public as our front desk. In my first year, I got a phone call from a man who was requesting a faculty member to consult with the FBI on his behalf to convince them to investigate someone he suspected of a decades old murder. He did not respond well to being told this was not a service we provide, and I wondered for a while if we would hear from him again…

What do you like to do outside of work? Outside of work, I like to cook/bake, draw, lift weights, and play games, including videogames and Dungeons and Dragons.

What’s something most people don’t know about you? Most people in the department probably don’t know that I also write fiction! I’ve been writing since middle school and hope to get a novel published eventually.

Could you share a favorite movie, book, or band that you would recommend to others? I highly recommend This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. It is a short novel about two rival agents in an eternal time war exchanging encoded letters; poetic writing, imaginative world building, and deeply emotional.

Melinda Wolf

Department Accounting Technician/Business Services Coordinator

Where are you from? Southern New Jersey

When did you begin at UNCG? 2001.

What is your typical day like at UNCG? A bit of everything…it’s different every day.

Can you describe a particularly challenging or funny thing that you’ve dealt with at UNCG? Haha! Just working at UNCG in Eberhart provides daily challenges and sometimes comical situations. Snakes on the first floor, lost students and delivery people…squirrels attacking!?

What do you like to do outside of work? I like to hang out with my kids and grandkids, read, garden, bake, go on hikes and walks.

What’s something most people don’t know about you? ??

Could you share a favorite movie, book, or band that you would recommend to others? This Beautiful Fantastic is my favorite movie. I read a lot of books… so hard to choose one, latest James by Percival Everett. Band? Soooo many!  One new one 🙂 Rainbow Kitten Surprise
