Academic Advising
For undergraduate psychology students
Welcome!
We are excited to partner with you as you explore our major and develop your plan towards graduation. Our Canvas website is geared to meet all of your advising needs as you consider your future goals and how our department can prepare you for your next step – whether a job or continuing your education in graduate or professional school!
All freshmen psychology students with completion of less than 30 credit hours (excluding in-progress courses) are required to meet with the College of Arts and Sciences Advising (CASA) Office by appointment (no walk-ins) for in-depth advising and planning. Please contact CASA at casa@uncg.edu or see casa.uncg.edu for an appointment. After you have met with an advisor in CASA, you are welcome to attend peer advising to review your plans and develop a long-term academic plan.
Students who are new transfers from other schools and who are majoring in psychology can email psyadvise@uncg.edu to set up a consultation with an advisor between August-November December and January-April. CASA (casa@uncg.edu) handles new transfer student advising during the winter break and summer months (May-July).
Your advisor for the psychology major is “PsyAdvise” (directed by Dr. Jessica Caporaso, your listed advisor). The Psychology Advising Canvas website is the primary source for all of your advising needs. We send out all advising-related announcements through this site and it is through this site that you will receive your advising code each semester. In addition, our Canvas course contains various resources for course registration, degree planning, and careers in psychology.
In addition to the Canvas course, you can also stop by an in-person or virtual drop-in or peer advising session to meet with faculty and advisors to answer questions. The schedule for these sessions will be posted on the Psychology Advising Canvas page at the beginning of each semester. You may also email any questions to psyadvise@uncg.edu. Please note that PsyAdvise is closed during the summer and during university breaks. If you need advising assistance during those times, please contact CASA: casa@uncg.edu
If you are a psychology major planning to attend graduate school for medical school, dentistry, veterinary science, physical therapy, or occupational therapy, please be on the lookout for degree planning meeting information at the beginning of each semester. You may also attend daily drop-in or peer advising.
If you completed coursework at another four-year college or university and would like to know if it counts toward your UNCG psychology major requirements, please contact our Undergraduate Program Director by emailing psy_upd@uncg.edu.
The psychology major is great major for studying abroad. Both the BA and BS degrees are flexible and our advisors will work with each student to ensure they take courses abroad that will count towards their degree progress. If you are interested in studying abroad and want to speak with an advisor before applying, or if you were already accepted into a study abroad program and need to complete a Transfer Equivalency Form, please email psyadvise@uncg.edu.
Undergraduates may not take more than 18 semester hours except with the approval of the Psychology Department Undergraduate Program Director or the Director of Advising. To request special permission to take more than 18 semester hours during a regular semester, or more than 7 semester hours in any one given summer session, you must fill out a Credit Limit Increase Form*. A Credit Limit Request Form is also necessary if enrollment in winter session courses results in the spring semester plus winter term course load exceeding 18 hours. Questions about the form may be sent to the Undergraduate Program Director (psy_upd@uncg.edu).
Keep in mind that requests are granted at the discretion of the Psychology Department Undergraduate Program Director or Director of Advising.
Dependent on your circumstances, approval of your request may require one or both of the following:
- A minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA
- Anticipated graduation date within 1-2 semesters
Please note that course overload requests are only approved for students in academic good standing, regardless of a student’s anticipated graduation date.
* This form is for Psychology Majors only. Non-psychology students should contact their department’s UPD for the appropriate form.
