Psychology Internship Program

PSY 472 Internship in Psychology

PSY 472 is a 3-credit course offered by the Department of Psychology at UNCG. It is taught by a faculty member in the department and is offered regularly during the fall and spring semester.

How does it work?

UNCG Psychology Interns are placed with community, clinical, school, healthcare, higher education and other appropriate applied settings in order to learn more about the application and practice of psychology. The goals of the internship are for students to gain knowledge and build skills in their area of interest. Our students are expected to work about 6-8 hours per week is spent at the placement site across the semester. This results in a total internship experience of about 80 hours. We meet weekly with students to discuss their internships and to work on their professional development, such as writing resumes, cvs, and interviewing or networking skills.

What do students need to do to enroll?

Share your interest by contacting Dr. Julia Mendez Smith, currently the Internship Coordinator and PSY 472 instructor. Her email is jlmendez@uncg.edu

Are there any prerequisites?

Yes, you must have junior or senior standing at UNCG and you must have taken PSY 341 or PSY 275. You should also have a GPA that is a minimum of 3.0   If you have a faculty member that can attest to your level of responsibility, you can share that as well. You must pass a background check and drug screen.

What are some examples of internships that might be available?

Keeping in mind that internships are not always available for specific semesters, Dr. Julia Mendez Smith has a list of UNCG and community sponsored internship sites. Some internships also have specific requirements for interns, such as availability in the afternoons/evenings or language(s). You can also propose a site for your internships and with reasonable notice, we can try and arrange that as a placement for you.

Do I have to enroll in PSY 472 to get an internship?

No, but you cannot earn course credit for an internship without enrolling in the course. Keep in mind that we typically do not offer the course during the summer, and so internships in the summer will be great experiences for you but will not count toward your degree requirements.
