The UNCG Psychology Clinic is committed to offering high quality, evidence-based mental health services at affordable rates.
We recognize that even though our standard fees rates are substantially lower than other providers in the area, they may contribute to a client’s financial burden. As we are committed to increasing access to mental health services for underserved individuals and families through providing affordable, high quality services, all clients have the option to apply for financial assistance to determine a fee based on a sliding scale.
If you(r family) can pay our full rates or would like to donate to the clinic, these funds help support access to services for those with greater financial challenges. We appreciate your support of our graduate student clinicians in training and other individuals in our community!

Frequently Asked Questions
The UNCG Psychology Clinic is a training clinic where graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology provide services under the supervision of licensed psychologists and health service providers in North Carolina. At this time, all supervisors at our clinic are also faculty members in the Psychology department. To ensure the highest quality of care, supervision includes digital recording of sessions and close monitoring of services. Our clinic specializes in comprehensive psychological evaluations and time-limited, evidence-based treatment, with most therapy cases concluding within 16 sessions or fewer.
Yes! While some of our clients are students and/or employees (faculty, staff) at UNCG, we are an outpatient mental health clinic, proudly serving the Greensboro community, as well as the larger Piedmont Triad area.
We understand that beginning therapy or undergoing a psychological evaluation can feel overwhelming. The UNCG Psychology Clinic staff is here to answer your questions and make the process as smooth as possible. While our website provides extensive information about our clinic, services, and team, we recognize that you may prefer to speak with someone directly. You can reach us at 336.334.5662, Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 7 PM, and Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM. If we are unable to answer your call, please leave a voicemail, and we will return your call as soon as possible.
Steps to Begin Services
Initial Contact
If you are interested in receiving services, please call us at 336-334-5662 or submit a Client Interest Form online.
If you’ve submitted a Client Interest Form on our website, our clinic staff will contact you by phone within 2-3 business days to review our clinic services and policies.
We connect with all potential clients via phone to exchange basic information about the clinic and the person requesting services before we send electronic paperwork so we can ensure we offer the service that’s being requested and that you understand the nature of our training clinic before we ask you to complete any forms.
Intake Paperwork
We will send you intake paperwork using an encrypted email (from a service called Hushmail). You will be prompted to login or create a password to access the easy-to-complete forms, ensuring your information remains protected. To avoid delays, we strongly recommend completing and returning the paperwork as soon as possible. Please feel free to reach out with any questions along the way.
Paperwork Review & Clinician Assignment
Once we receive your completed paperwork, our team will review and upload it into our system, which may take up to one week. After processing, your information will be shared with a clinician, who will contact you within 2-3 business days.
Screening Appointment
Your assigned clinician will reach out to send you a brief questionnaire to complete and schedule a virtual screening appointment (usually 30 minutes – 1 hour), where they will review your presenting concerns, assess whether our clinic is a good fit for your needs, and answer any remaining questions.
Waitlist & First Appointment
If our clinic is determined to be the right fit, you will be placed on our waitlist for the next available clinician. We strive to serve clients as quickly as possible. Once a clinician and their supervisor have been assigned to your treatment team, your clinician will contact you to schedule your first appointment.
We will communicate with clients and potential clients through Hushmail, which is a service that allows us to send encrypted emails to enhance the privacy and security of your electronic communications with the clinic. You do not need a Hushmail account to access our messages.
When you receive any emails from us, it will contain a link that you’ll need to click to access the message. To view the message, click the blue text box that says: “Read your Secure Message” and you will be redirected to your internet browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge).
The first time you receive a message, you will be asked to log in using an existing account (Google, Microsoft, or Apple) OR to create a password that is specific to your Hushmail account. (We will not be able to see the password you create.)
- For example, if you have an existing Google or Gmail account, it may be easier to select Continue with Google. Here is a video on how to use this option (33 second YouTube video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7ZWqZPB3rk
- If you select the “Use a password” option, be sure to write down your password in a secure place. Many web browsers have an option to save passwords for you; please only use this option if accessing the message from a personal, non-shared device. If you forget your password later, please click the “Can’t remember your passphrase?” link below the password entry field, and click the blue “Reset my passphrase” link.
Once you select your preferred method you will be able to view and respond to our messages, including accessing any of the easy-to-complete forms we may send!
The clinician who conducts your initial screening appointment may not be the same person assigned to you for testing and/or therapy. Though all our clinicians can conduct your screening appointment, our goal is to match you with a clinician who has emerging expertise or demonstrated competence in your specific referral needs. If you choose to use your Medicaid benefits (as outlined below), we will also ensure that you are matched with a Medicaid-credentialed clinician.
Yes. Our ethical and legal obligations insofar as confidentiality is concerned are the same as those for any other mental health clinic or psychologist in private practice. We do not disclose any information about our clients or their identities without their written authorization to do so. There are, however, some legal and ethical limitations on our ability to maintain confidentiality in certain cases. We are, for example, legally or ethically obligated to break confidentiality if it is necessary in order to prevent clients from harming themselves or someone else. We also are legally obligated to respond to court orders and subpoenas as well as to report cases of child/elder abuse or neglect. Clients of the clinic are given written information concerning the limitations on confidentiality.
All potential clients must first complete a screening appointment to determine if the clinic is a good fit for your needs before being placed on a waitlist. The table below provides an estimate of our wait time to be matched with a provider.
Please note the timeframe may be longer if you wish to work with a Medicaid-credentialed provider. Read more about guidelines for Medicaid clients here.
| Child/Adolescent Individual Therapy Parenting support is also included in this category | We have providers with immediate availability for self-pay! 0-1 month |
| Child/Adolescent Psychological and/or Educational Testing | 3-6 months |
| Adult Individual Therapy | 1-2 months |
| Adult Psychological and/or Educational Testing | 6 months |
We strive to match clients with clinicians they feel comfortable with; however, we cannot guarantee specific requests. Assignments are based on clinician availability and open slots in their caseloads. Please inform your screening clinician of any potential preferences (e.g., gender, cultural background).
Telehealth or teletherapy is a term that refers to therapy services being provided via video conferencing on the internet (e.g., Teams call). Our providers can offer telehealth options for therapy; however, being seen via telehealth is not guaranteed. Not all clients are appropriate for telehealth. For example, a young child who is hyper-active is more likely to benefit from in-person services where movement and physical interaction can occur.
Most services for an assessment must be conducted in person; however, there may be some parts of the process that can be conducted virtually.
If you are interested in telehealth options, please let us know when requesting services. This consideration will be discussed and reviewed by supervisors before proceeding.
All clients must be physically present in the state of North Carolina during sessions, based on the provider/supervisors’ licenses. There may be rare cases where we can conduct a session for clients outside of the state, but this must be discussed with the provider in advance.
Some of our graduate clinicians are Spanish speakers and can provide therapy in Spanish. However, please note that requesting a Spanish-speaking clinician may result in a longer wait time. Additionally, the availability of Spanish-speaking clinicians and supervisors varies from year to year, so we cannot guarantee one will be available at the time of your request. If a client or their participating family members requires Spanish-language services, we will provide an interpreter, if a Spanish-speaking clinician is not available.
Please let our staff know if you have language access needs for another language, as we will do our best to provide accommodations (e.g., interpreter).
No. If clients are in need of medications or physical evaluations, we can offer referral options for other providers in our community.
Our assessments include an intake session, multiple testing sessions, a feedback session, and a detailed written report. Each assessment is individualized to meet your specific needs, so the process may vary from person to person. On average, you will meet with your clinician 2–6 times, with each session lasting approximately 2 hours. All sessions are covered under a flat testing package rate.
Once your assessment is complete, you will return for a final feedback session, during which your clinician will review the report with you, discuss assessment outcomes, provide future recommendations, and give you a copy of your report.
We can share your assessment results with other providers or schools with your permission. Your clinician can provide you with a release and disclosure form to specify the parties who should receive the report.
We will not share any results without the client or authorized representative’s written permission.
As of January 2025, we are not accepting requests for evaluations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We believe you would be better served by one of the autism specialty clinics in our area. If you are seeking an evaluation for other concerns (e.g., ADHD, learning disability) and you suspect symptoms of autism, we may include some brief screening measures in our assessment that would help us determine if we recommend you seek an autism-specific evaluation at another clinic, or if it is unlikely you (or your child) would qualify for an autism diagnosis.
Financial assistance is available for all potential clients (except UNCG students, who already receive the lowest possible rates!)
Services may be provided to clients at a reduced fee using a “sliding scale” based on annual household income and number of dependents. We require a copy of financial documents (e.g., W2 form, pay stub, food stamps receipt) to verify income and determine a reduced rate. The majority of our clients qualify for some level of financial assistance. Please contact our front desk to receive an estimated quote and get started with financial assistance at 336.334.5662.
We accept Medicaid Direct and Medicaid managed by Healthy Blue and Trillium Health Resources.
We do not accept any private insurance and are considered “out of network” for all other insurance companies. Some insurance companies may offer reimbursement for services paid “out of pocket” with out of network providers, such as our clinic. We can provide you with a Superbill (an itemized list of all services provided to a client), which you can submit directly to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. Please note that you will be responsible for paying the full fees for services to the clinic and reimbursement will depend on your insurance provider’s policy.
- Note: This option cannot be used in combination with the Financial Assistance Scale. Superbills are only available for individuals who pay the full, standard rate for services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to determine which option is the best fit for you.
We can only accept Medicaid Direct and Medicaid managed by Healthy Blue and Trillium Health Resources.
Please note: Not all services offered at the clinic are covered by Medicaid. For example, educational testing (e.g., learning disorder evaluations) are not covered and must be paid out of pocket.
We have a limited number of providers who are credentialed with Medicaid. As a result, the wait time to work with a Medicaid-credentialed clinicians and use your Medicaid benefits is longer than the wait time to see one of our other providers.
Individuals with Medicaid coverage have the option to wait for a Medicaid-credentialed clinician to use your benefits for covered services OR you can apply for financial assistance to determine a fee for services using our sliding scale rates to work with one of our other providers, if they may be available sooner.
For therapy, we request that you pay when checking in with the front desk staff before each session.
If you are being seen via telehealth (e.g., video call), we ask that you contact the clinic via phone (336.334.5562) to make a payment immediately following each session.
For assessment, we require at least 50% of the total cost be paid at your first session. The remainder of the balance must be paid at or before your final feedback session.
