They scurry around the department to classes, labs, and seminars. We see them present and read their reaction papers. Let’s take some time to learn about the people behind the PowerPoints. Graduate students are essential to the research enterprise and valued members of any department with a graduate program. The goal of the “meet the graduate students” series is to learn more about the experiences of these key players in the Department of Psychology at UNCG.
Let’s meet one of our (at the time of this article) second year students, Julian Madrigal. Julian began at UNCG in the Fall 2024 semester. He works with Dr. Levi Baker and is enrolled in the Social Psychology Ph.D. program. Julian earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Path to and Experiences in Graduate School
What inspired you to begin graduate studies?
I’m a nerd who likes thinking about how people interact with each other, critiquing our methods, and talking about both those things with other people. So, I figured graduate school was the perfect place to learn how to do both those things a lot better.
Can you describe your research area and interests?
My research area is conflict and problem-solving in romantic couples. In particular, I’m interested in factors that determine people’s behavior during conflict and perceptions of their partner during conflicts. I’m also interested in how couples “merge” their identities and realities to solve these problems.
What is something you’ve accomplished at UNCG of which you’re especially proud?
Building genuine relationships with other members of the program and establishing roots in a city on my own for the first time.
What advice would you give to students aspiring to attend graduate school?
Make sure you love what you’re studying enough that you’ll do the things you hate doing.
Fun Facts!
Where are you from?
Manila, Philippines/ Boston, MA/ Los Angeles, CA
What do you like to do outside of school?
I really enjoy cooking, going on hikes with my fiancée Juni, spending time with friends in the program (sometimes while playing Dungeons and Dragons), and watching the Great British Bake Off.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’ve torn ligaments in both of my kneecaps and both of my wrists.
Could you share a favorite movie, book, or band that you would recommend to others?
A TV show called Arcane. Season 1 is peak television.
