If we want parents to work, they need childcare that is accessible, affordable, and effective. The National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families has released a new brief by UNC Greensboro Psychology professor Dr. Julia Mendez-Smith and HDFS’ Dr. Danielle Crosby that synthesized a decade’s worth of research on “what [they] have learned… about the strengths and needs of Latino families who seek to access child care in support of their work and to enrich the lives of their children.” The report points out that access is improving for low-income Latine and Hispanic families, but also identifies significant continuing challenges and raises important questions about the affordability and accessibility of childcare for families from all backgrounds. The authors also draw attention to policy changes that they think could specifically benefit Latine and Hispanic parents from low-income backgrounds.
